An Efficient Photo-SET-Induced Cleavage of Dithiane-Carbonyl Adducts and Its Relevance to the Development of Photoremovable Protecting Groups for Ketones and Aldehydes

چکیده
Irradiation of dithiane-aldehyde/ketone adducts in the presence of benzophenone leads to C-C bond cleavage regenerating the carbonyl compounds. It is established that the mechanism of this reaction involves photochemically induced single electron transfer from the dithiane moiety to the excited molecule of ET-photosensitizer, accompanied by mesolytic C-C cleavage in the generated cation-radical, which is assisted by the anion-radical of benzophenone. This mechanism is confirmed by a Hammett plot study of the cleavage in the dithiane adducts of substituted aromatic aldehydes and a deuterium kinetic isotope effect study. Ab initio computations at UHF/6-31G* and MP2/631G* levels of theory in conjunction with self-consistent reaction field (self-consistent isodensitypolarized continuum model), to account for the solvent effect, also support the experimental findings. The reaction is most efficient for protection of aromatic aldehydes and ketones and aliphatic ketones, and is a novel method for protecting carbonyl functionalities with a photoremovable group.

Tonsil Clay as a Green Catalyst for Rapid and Efficient Reduction of Aldehydes and Ketones with NaBH3CN
Reduction of aldehydes and ketones to the corresponding alcohols in the presence of sodium cyanoborohdride as reductive agent and Tonsil clay as catalyst under solvent free conditions was investigated. Tonsil (catalyst) decreased the reduction time of each aldehyde and ketone to proportional alcohols in comparison with their reduction in the absence of catalyst with high degree purity of alcoho...

Methyldihydrodithiepins are converted into the corresponding carboxaldehydes via a simple and efficient oxidation by oxygen in carbon tetrachloride. The reaction is not a radical chain process. The proposed mechanism involves photoinduced electron transfer from the starting dithiepin to solvent (CCl4) followed by a series of events depicted in Scheme 1. The critical feature of the mechanism is ...

Molecular fragmentations induced by oxidative electron transfer present a fascinating theoretical challenge and generate a great deal of interest due to their potential applications. It is well-known, for example, that in vicinal diols, amino alcohols, and amino ethers, C-C bonds weakened by photoinduced electron transfer cleave efficiently and selectively. Mechanistic aspects of this cleavage ...
